Not a bug, time is convoluted in dark souls (it's latency and you can just google it or search here on the dark souls forums and you'll find one of my prior in-depth explanations for it so I don't have to type it yet again). TL;DR Git gud. You have backstab invincibility when standing up, but it is canceled the second you do something.

Target lock, riposte and backstab - WIP : r/Unity3D. Playing around with our combat system! Target lock, riposte and backstab - WIP. Rogue Masters is an upcoming co-op horde indie game with soulslike combat where you fight Entropy in long-lost civilizations. Find out more about our project at RogueMasters.com. Holy moly!

The backstab has to click "on" now, meaning it has to be in "allow to be backstab" mode. You can see this in action at Hunstman Copse. When Merciless Roennae invades get behind her and try backstabbing while she's attacking. She can't be while her switch is "off" (I've literally dagger slashed her back to stunlocked lack-o-backstab death).
Yes, but if it didn't work like that, getting a backstab would be heavily dependent on connection. Dark Souls 3 doesn't need even more ways of punishing aggression, and no game wants mechanics that sometimes just flat out don't work when properly executed.
Bleed and poise are not exploits. Like it or not, they're intended mechanics of the game. Call me salty, but Dark Souls PVP is a lot more fun when people lay off exploiting glitches and just dual. When it becomes all about the backstab you lose 90% of the gameplay (not to mention limiting the range of viable weapons).
The heavy attack into a reverse backstab is working out so ridiculously well for me it isn't funny. Dark Souls 2 SOTFS looks amazing with the new Lightning Engine
Like, if I'm stabbing at you with my claymore, I lead with my right foot, right? Since I wield it in the right hand and step forward to thrust (hoo, that sounds dirty!). Well if you wanted to backstab me during my attack, you'd circle around to my right cheek and go for the backstab (getting dirtier!)
Some enemies are immune to critical hits but can still be parried. 4. Parrying works in a group of enemies, while backstabbing gets you hit by the other enemies more easily. Especially in lower Undead Burg and Anor Londo, trying to fish for backstabs just results in you getting backstabbed by other enemies. When i first played dark souls, i never really bothered to use backstepping, and after dark souls 1 and 2, i started using it a bit in demon's souls, but i've found that it doesnt take you far enough back, and doesnt seem to have invincibility frames like rolling, so isnt rolling backwards a better choice 90% of the times, would like to hear UR3iUs2.
