You can receive those bonuses even before you get a hidden blade (the same goes for the ability below).
Forshields, Mut's Sorrow offers the highest damage absorption for ranged and the second best for melee attacks. You also have the Tomb protector which has slightly less ranged absorption, but it gives you slightly more base HP. However, my favourite shields are the Reinforced shield and the Guardian Lion shield (Dynasties Pack).
